A commemorative ceremony of the 95th anniversary of the breakthrough of the Thessalonika front took place on the 28th September, on the Serbian and allied military cemetery Zejtinlik in Thessaloniki.


On behalf of the Government of the Republic Serbia, a wreath was laid by Minister of Culture and Information, Mr Ivan Tasovac, on behalf of the Minister of Defense and the Army of R. Serbia, the commander of the land forces, General Aleksandar Zivkovic, on behalf of R. Srpska Minister of Labour and Veterans Petar Djokic, as well as spokesman for the monastery Chilandar. From the Greek side Minister of Macedonia and Thrace Mr Theodoros Karaoglu, Chief of the Headquarters of the National Defence R. Greece, Mikhail Kostarakosa, as well as Consul General of the R. France, Consul of the Russian Federation, the envoys of other allied countries Great Britain, Italy and Russia, representatives of local authorities and Serbian and other allied countries Association for preserving traditions battles of the First World War.


Liturgy and rite was served by prior of the Monastery Chilandar archimandrite Metodije, in one part together with His Grace Bishop Varnavas. After the laying of wreaths and the playing of the anthem, Minister Tasovac addressed the audience, recalling of our "duty to ask ourselves what kind of signs can be drawn from the feat of the most famous generation in Serbian history." He recalled the statement of allies representatives about Serbian outstanding military efforts in the struggle for freedom and expressed special gratitude to Greece, which at that time was the "second homeland to Serbian Army and civilians."


The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Embassy and the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia, Serbian students and young people, diaspora, as well as students of Serbian supplementary school "Sveti Sava" in Thessaloniki.
